“Okay, spill it.” Persy gave Max a flat look, waving the wand of her mascara around like a weapon.

If he knew his girlfriend, she’d find a way to use it as one.

“Nothing,” he mumbled, averting his gaze to the window where the morning sun was peeking out of the clouds.

“You’ve been weird since last night.” Persy frowned as she turned to the mirror to swipe more mascara on her eyelashes.

“We watched three people die last night, one of them being my old friend. Excuse me if I’m not acting like it’s a regular Tuesday.”

Setting down her makeup on the counter completely, Persy walked over to Max with unimpressed eyes. He could read the words in them crystal clear.

Do not insult my intelligence, Max, they warned him.

“Want to try that again?” she asked graciously.

Posture slumping, Max let out a long sigh. Rubbing at his eyes, he let the words seep through his mouth while his vision was a blur. “We need to convince Varian to ditch the Bureau. We need to do this our way.”

When his hands fell to his sides and he peered down at Persy, the frown on her face hadn’t moved an inch.

“Max, what gives us the right to decide the fate of the world all on our own?”

“The Bureau is corrupt—”

“I didn’t ask if the Bureau was corrupt,” she said pointedly.

His jaw locked. “We can’t just watch people die.”

“Again, not what I asked.”

“We’re the firstborn descendants! It’s our job, our destiny.” If anyone was qualified to make this call it was them.

Persy simply stared at him.

He hated when she did that. It usually meant he was wrong.

“The last chosen ones are the reason we’re in this mess. One of them decided to steal a sapling all on their own, with no outside input. I’m sure they had the same thought—they were destined to save the world, it was their calling, it was their call to make.

“Now look at us, running around playing whack-a-mole while the Conu target sapling after sapling. All of that could have been avoided if the original crusaders had just destroyed all the saplings when they had the chance.”

Max shook his head vehemently. “No. No, we can’t sit back and watch people die, Persy. We have to do something. These Bureau people”—his dark grumble vibrated in his chest—“they have the most illogical strategies. Do you honestly think it was a good idea to have the Conu’s return broadcast to the entire world? There’s gonna be a panic.”

Persy took his hands into her own, her eyes thawing a fraction as she pressed a soft kiss to his knuckles. “We can’t change the past, love. There’s going to be a public reaction and we’re going to have to roll with the punches.”

“They’re going to ask about us. They’re going to want to know what we’ve been doing all these years.” A strangled half laugh wheezed out of him. “We’ve been sitting on our asses this whole time. We should have been training since birth.”

“We can’t change the past,” she repeated.
